When I first came to the UK, I noticed something interesting. Every time I asked a person, “How are you?", they’d reply along the lines of, “I’m good, how are you?” After a while I thought, wow, it seems like everyone in this country is doing pretty well!
Where I come from, if someone asks you that question you would answer genuinely and share how you really are, whether happy, sad, exhausted, or overwhelmed. I understand that different cultures have different social norms and that it would be pretty unusual here if you started ‘bothering' people about your low mood or your dodgy knee after that first question… it’s cultural conditioning, and I learned that it can take a bit more time or a dedicated space here before it feels like there is safety or permission to open up more.
This is why I’m passionate about teaching 1-2-1 classes - it gives the time, space and trust for clients to be able to share how they’re really doing and for me to understand that and how a tailored practice can support their needs. We are able to check in on what they need to gain from the sessions, how the practices are making them feel, and to adapt along the way. It makes me so happy when we can develop a deep and honest connection, as that’s where the magic happens.
I teach 1-2-1 classes to people with a wide range of different needs, whether absolute beginners, postnatal mums, athletes, cancer survivors, people with specific injuries, women going through perimenopause and menopause, or people who simply prefer the individual tailored attention and benefits that the 1-2-1 space offers them over a group experience.
